New Zealand have taken out their first game of the summer today, defeating the West Indies by five wickets at Auckland’s Eden Park, in a game that went down to the wire.

The first innings was dominated by West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard who blasted a 75 off 37 balls taking the West Indies to 180/7 at the end of the first innings.

Both innings were shortened to just 16 overs, after sporadic showers in the first innings caused several stoppages in play.

The star of the first innings for New Zealand was Lockie Ferguson who was consistently hitting speeds in excess of 150km/h, picking up a five-wicket bag in the process.

Taking into account the rain delays, New Zealand were given an adjusted second innings total of 176 to chase in 16 overs.

The Black Caps opening pair fell cheaply however, debutant Devon Conway dug his heels in, steadying the Black Caps’ innings with a gritty 41 off 29 balls.

Later in his innings, Conway worked in tandem with Jimmy Neesham to put on a 50-run partnership, a performance which ultimately brought New Zealand into a winning position.

Neesham top-scored for the Black Caps, posting an unbeaten 48, off just 24 balls in an innings filled with fireworks.

Glenn Phillips also came in for a quick fire 22 off just 7 balls featuring three sixes and a four.

Phillips required attention during his innings after collapsing at the crease after crushing a six over the long on region, in what seemed to be cramp.

The nature of his injury is unknown, however he played on before being dismissed shortly after.

Mitchell Santner was tasked with picking up the winning runs as the Black Caps needed four runs off the final over and the tail-ender did it emphatically.

Santner blasted a six with four balls remaining, sealing the five-wicket victory.

The Black Caps and West Indies go head to head again on Sunday at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui in the second T20 of their three-match T20 series.
