Black Caps bemoan 'shocking' third umpire call against rookie batsman

February 9, 2019

Daryl Mitchell was given out in dubious circumstances against India.

Black Caps spinner Ish Sodhi says he was left scratching his head after the dismissal of batsman Daryl Mitchell in last night's T20 loss to India, appearing to have hit the ball.

Mitchell, 27, was given out in the sixth over of last night's seven wicket defeat, however the review appeared to show he'd in fact hit the ball, which should have resulted in the decision being overturned.

However, third umpire Shaun Haig stayed with the on-field decision, leaving Mitchell out for just one run as the Black Caps limped to 158/8 from their 20 overs - which India chased down with seven wickets and seven balls to spare.

Speaking to media last night, though, Sodhi said the team were left clueless when the dismissal came through.

"Shocking," Sodhi began.

"I genuinely didn't really understand what was going on. I think most people saw that there was a hotspot on the bat.

"We were pretty gutted about it, gutted for Daryl. Second game, coming out and having something that I've never seen in international cricket before. Interesting."

Both the Black Caps and India now head to Hamilton for the series decider tomorrow night.
