Black Caps aware India series will be World Cup audition

January 21, 2019

Several players are out to stake their claim for a spot in New Zealand's 15-man cup squad.

When the Black Caps' five-match ODI series with India begins on Wednesday, several members of the squad will have to step up their intensity if they plan on making coach Gary Stead's 15-man squad for this year's World Cup.

With the tournament scheduled to begin at the end of May, pressure is mounting on several places in the Black Caps' first-choice side, with only a few selections all but nailed on.

Speaking to media today, batsman Ross Taylor said that the mood within the side bodes well for the series, with the competition for places bringing the best out of several players.

"Every time you get out there I think there's an opportunity for guys to stake their claim," Taylor began.

"I'm not sure in terms of rotation or any of that type of stuff, but I'm sure that the guys will know that this is an opportunity to push for not just the starting XI, but a place in the 15 as well."

The Black Caps' five-match series with India begins on Wednesday in Napier.
