Black Cap Scott Kuggeleijn shines in IPL debut as Chennai topple Punjab

April 7, 2019

Black Caps all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn enjoyed a successful debut in the Indian Premier League, snaring two wickets for the Chennai Super Kings in their 22-run victory over the Kings XI Punjab.

With Chennai batting first and making 160/3 from their 20 overs, Punjab were rocked early in their reply by losing both Chris Gayle and Mayank Argawal, leaving the score at 7/2 after two overs.

However, a partnership of 110 between KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan had Punjab back in the contest, only for Kuggeleijn to end their stand.

A barrage of short balls saw Rahul out caught in the deep attempting to pull, with Ravindra Jadeja completing the catch to remove the Punjab opener for 55.

Regular wickets from that point would need Punjab needing 26 from the final over, with Chennai captain MS Dhoni entrusting death bowling duties to Kuggeleijn.

With Khan still at the crease, Kuggeleijn would have Punjab's danger man out caught on the boundary by South Africa's Faf du Plessis for 67, sealing Chennai's win.

Kuggeleijn finished with figures of 2/37 from his four overs, as the Super Kings claimed the win by 22 runs.

The win sends Chennai top of the IPL ladder, after the Sunrisers Hyderabad's crushing defeat to the Mumbai Indians.
