'Always exciting to get back together' – Black Caps assemble in Christchurch ahead of UAE tour

The Black Caps are well underway in their preparations to travel to the UAE to face Pakistan in October, with a number of the squad assembling in Christchurch.

Speaking to 1 NEWS today, seamer Tim Southee spoke about the feeling in the camp, having not been together as a unit since the start of April.

"It's always exciting to get back together after a break," he said.

"Obviously, all the guys aren't here, we've got various guys playing in various competitions around the world still, but it's nice to catch up with the guys that have been home for a while, and get some training on some grass wickets."

Southee also spoke about the appointment of new coach Gary Stead, saying that he looks forward to the new approach following the departure of Mike Hesson.

"He'll come with fresh ideas, and obviously a lot of success with Canterbury.

"I'm sure he'll have plenty to offer, but he'll be very fortunate to come into a side that's played some good cricket over the years.

"We're always looking to ways to improve as a side."
