Winston Hill wins boxing bronze for Fiji - 'I just want to send love back home to everybody'

Fijian boxer Winston Hill leaves the Gold Coast with his head held high - and with a bronze medal for the Pacific nation.

The 69kg boxer from Suva fell short in his Commonwealth Games semi-final with Northern Ireland's Aidan Walsh, going down in an unanimous judges' decision.

While he won't fight for the gold he was after, he has proudly won Fiji's third medal of the games.

"Coming into this competition as the underdog, we came up against a lot of big nations, I just want to give the glory and honour back to God," he said.

Hill paid tribute to Walsh, saying he was the last man he wanted to fight in the final four.

"Tough match indeed, hell of a boxing match. Aidan Walsh, very good range, he knows his distance, he knows his timing,

"That's what amateur boxing dictates, and that's exactly what he did. Take it back to the drawing table, a lot more training for me."

He wanted to send a simple message to all those cheering him on back home, as well as thanking the raucous Fijian fans in the crowd.

"I just want to send love back home to everybody."

Earlier, Walsh's sister Michaela beat Kiwi Alexis Pritchard in their women's 57kg semi-final.
