New Zealand gold medal heroes David Liti and Julia Ratcliffe got celebrations underway early before the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony in the Gold Coast, when they danced past a 1 NEWS sports reporter during a hilarious live television cross.

Kiwi athletes Liti and Ratcliffe spoke to 1 NEWS Australian correspondent Kimberlee Downs about their Commonwealth Games campaign before performing a synchronised shoulder dance behind the reporter.

"Is there something going on behind me?" asked Downs during her live cross.

"I am getting a lot of smiles behind me at the moment."

The 1 NEWS reporter saw the funny side of the stunt and laughed off Liti and Ratcliffe's impromptu dance.

Liti won gold in the men's 91kg+ men’s weightlifting division with Ratcliffe winning gold in the women's hammer throw event.
