Sneak Peek: Gold Coast Comm Games opening ceremony extravaganza to feature Aboriginal culture, beach party

April 3, 2018

Aboriginal culture and a classic Aussie summer are just two of the themes confirmed to feature in tomorrow night's Commonwealth Games opening ceremony after footage of a dress rehearsal for the curtain-raising event was released.

Footage of a practice run in Carrara Stadium, where the ceremony is taking place tomorrow, showed contrasts between the dark and eerie chanting and dances of native Australian performers with the bright and colourful swimsuits, surfboards and singing of a beach party.

A giant circular field of sand features is in the middle of the stadium for the performance.

Countries have begun naming their flag bearers for the event, with New Zealand naming their chosen representative this evening.

Early front runners for the honour are rumoured to be shot putter Tom Walsh and  para swimmer Sophie Pascoe.
