Kiwi weightlifter Laurel Hubbard says shock injury going for record lift at Commonwealth Games is career ending

April 10, 2018

Kiwi weightlifter Laurel Hubbard says that her injury sustained in yesterday's over 90kg weightlifting competition at the Commonwealth Games is so serious it has ended her career.

The 40-year-old transgender athlete, hot favourite to win gold yesterday, twisted and injured her left elbow in her final snatch attempt.

She couldn't take part in the clean and jerk.

Hubbard had been going for a Games snatch record of 132kg, but her determination to produce her absolute best cost her the win.

The Kiwi lifter was forced to withdraw from competition with an elbow injury yesterday.

Speaking at the New Zealand Village Hubbard said her arm is "busted" and her injury is a career ender.

She remained upbeat though, saying she was glad she went out giving it her all.
