Watch: Violent benches-clearing brawl spills into stands during US high school basketball tournament

November 27, 2018

A high school basketball game in the US turned ugly after a benches-clearing fight made its way into the stands.

The game between Alton and Riverview Gardens on Saturday came to a stop in the third quarter while Alton were leading 64-43.

The brawl was sparked by a cheap shot from an Alton player with members of the Riverview Gardens team then pursuing him until chaos erupted.

One referee who attempted to stop the fight in its early stages was sent to the deck hard and trampled on with the fight moving into the stands at Alton High School in Illinois.

Despite multiple pleas from the announcer, fans got involved in the fight, which was slowly broken up.

Both teams ended up forfeiting the match and their remaining games in the Redbird Tip-Off Classic before the tournament was cancelled altogether.

Local authorities are now investigating the incident with indications that "additional punishments", including suspensions, could be handed out.
