Canterbury Rams basketballer Gareth Dawson has been handed a four-year suspension, having tested positive for a banned substance in May this year.

Dawson, 28, was found with the substance higenamine in his system, a thermogenic fat burner that is prohibited by the National Basketball League.

The failed test dating back to May 27 this year saw Dawson handed a provisional suspension on September 4, before failing to attend a hearing set for November.

The incident isn't Dawson's first brush with the use of banned substances. He was suspended for 12-months over a prohibited substance in 2014.
