5.8 earthquake southwest of Stewart Island

GeoNet is reporting a 5.8 magnitude earthquake, 85km west of Snares Island near Stewart Island just after midday at 12.42 pm.

The earthquake monitoring service originally reported a second 4.7 quake near the South Island town of Roxburgh - this reading has now been attributed to the Snares Island shake.

GeoNet says it was a 'shallow quake', current reading says it was 12km deep.

Snares Island is a small island group about 100km south-west of Stewart island.
