Are you eligible? About 10,000 Aucklanders pay too much in rates, council says

November 21, 2017

Debbie Acott of Auckland Council says with potential rates rises on the cards, some may be looking for extra help.

About 10,000 Aucklanders could be paying less on their rates, Auckland Council says, as some consider an upcoming rise in their annual bill.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has promised no more than an average rates rise of 2.5 per cent, with his recommendation on rates due to be submitted to the Department of Internal Affairs on November 30.

The impact of the new valuations on rates will not be known until the beginning of the new rates year - July 1, 2018.

The figures come from Auckland Council's three yearly re-valuation of properties for rates purposes.

Debbie Acott, head of rates at Auckland Council, said with the average property's capital value yesterday officially increasing by an average of 46 per cent, some may be thinking about ways to mitigate a rise in rates.

"If you're on a low or fixed income, you could well be eligible for a rates rebate," she said.

"We think that there are about 10,000 Aucklanders who are not applying who would be eligible."

Calculators to determine potential rebates are available both on the Council's website and the Department of Internal Affairs' website .
