A 40-year-old man has died after a scissor lift toppled over at the port of Lyttelton this afternoon.
The man was the sole occupant of the lift when it fell to the ground at Gladstone Pier where he died at the scene.
An investigation into the incident has begun, with emergency services and Worksafe New Zealand at the scene.
Rail and Maritime Transport Union South Island organiser John Kerr told Fairfax: "What I can say is everybody on that waterfront is going to be shocked and angered about this . . . any death at work is one too many and this is the third in 12 months on that waterfront, this is just wrong," he said.
The matter has been referred to the coroner and the man's family are being supported.
