Woman shot while walking in Masterton in early hours of the morning

A woman has been shot while walking in Masterton in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police say the 35-year-old was shot while walking on Clyde Street at about 2:50am.

They say the woman was driven to Masterton Hospital by a local resident and is in a stable condition having undergone surgery.

Detective Sergeant Bill Van Woerkom says police have spoken to the victim and a number of residents in the area.

"Someone in our community will know who is responsible," he says.

"We believe this was an isolated incident and wish to reassure the community they are not in danger."
