A woman fell down a sinkhole in Tauranga after the lid was damaged by a car.

A woman has been rescued from a sinkhole in Tauranga this morning.

A contractor said the lid had been damaged by a car, and a pallet had been placed on top of the hole.

A local business owner said the woman, who works nearby, had just parked her car when she fell.

She managed to hold on for a short time before slipping about two metres.

An ambulance is at the scene and it is believed the woman isn't seriously injured.

Those in the area say the privately owned sinkholes have been an issue for some time.
