Woman missing near Arrowtown after spending night in the open found safe and well

April 24, 2018

An Australian woman has spent an unplanned night in the New Zealand wilderness after getting lost on a bushwalk.

The 52-year-old was overdue from a day walk on the Big Hill Trail near Arrowtown in Central Otago and police were called to help about 7.40pm.

The woman had earlier contacted a friend and said she had lost the track but may have found it again. Her mobile phone had since died.

Police, LandSAR volunteers and a helicopter with night vision goggles searched for the woman until 3.30am today.

They were preparing to set off again at 9am to continue searching but didn't need to as the woman walked out herself at 8.15am.

She had made a shelter overnight and waited to walk out. She is uninjured.
