Winter making its presence felt with dumpings of snow on alpine passes and heavy rain for parts of the country




A dumping of snow overnight has led to warnings for motorists in Canterbury wanting to use the alpine passes today.

Up to 30cm of snow is forecast to settle on Porters Pass, SH73, between late Sunday evening and this afternoon.

Arthur's Pass and Lewis Pass are both expected to receive from 4cm - 8cm of snow in the same period, with light snow also forecast for Lindis Pass.

A heavy rain warning is also in place for the Kapiti Coast and Wellington where 60mm to 75mm is forecast to fall in a 15 hour period from this morning until the evening.

Heavy rain is also forecast for the Tararuas this afternoon and evening.
