Winter is coming! And I'm nervous - Whanganui family prepares for the cooler months ahead without the supermarket

Our columnist Lydia Harvey and her family are preparing to head into winter solely relying on the produce of their garden. It's a prospect that's more than a little nerve-racking for the family.

Winter is coming and I'm secretly nervous about it.

The cooler season is one we are not welcoming, but we're definitely preparing hard for it.

Preparing for winter and how we would survive without going to the supermarket has been a summer long project for us.

We worked really hard from January 1 with the intention that winter will bring some much needed rest from outdoor work.

The hard slog during summer carried on until autumn when we turned over the garden and started replanting.

Luckily autumn is the perfect month for prepping and although the chickens laying is now minimal, the harvest from the garden has been good.

The passionfruit and feijoas are coming in thick and fast and the citrus trees have been well fed and will be our main source of vitamin C during the long cold winter months.

The staples we have been generously given over time and items such as bottled spaghetti, which we have stored away, have been slowly building up in our cupboards to use this winter.

We've been busy fermenting our apples into cider vinegar and we've slowly been turning the not so fancy vegetables we've saved from our garden into sauerkraut and bulk made soups.

I've been preparing meals for the coldest months in winter as well and freezing these.

The freezer is also filled with plums, tomatoes, pre-chopped onions and homemade veggie stock. The slow cooker is now living permanently on the bench in sauce making mode.

Amongst this we have been gathering and sharing firewood for those chilly nights.

There has been a ripple effect in the community with many neighbours now joining forces, I'm hoping the more involved the community is the more resources we can draw on as the clocks go back.

So bring on winter! I think.
