Winston Peters has spoken out against the Brunei government's implementation of Sharia law from next month, which includes stoning to death for homosexual sex acts , calling the move "seriously regrettable".

In a statement today, the acting Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister said, "It is seriously regrettable that Brunei's decision contravenes a number of international norms on human rights".

"New Zealand opposes any kind of discrimination, including on the basis of sexual orientation. We are also deeply concerned at the use of punishments that are cruel, inhuman or degrading.

"New Zealand is a long-standing opponent of the use of the death penalty in all cases and in all circumstances."

It comes after entertainers Goege Clooney and Elton John called for a boycott of nine hotels linked to Brunei, including The Dorchester and Coworth Park in the UK, and the Beverly Hills Hotel and Hotel Bel-Air in the US.
