A wet, wild and windy night in Wellington caused a yacht to crash into rocks and brought a slip down in Hutt Valley.

The yacht broke its mooring in Evans Bay and ended up on the rocks beneath Hataitai this morning. Maritime Police attended the scene.

A slip also came down onto the road in Stokes Valley, Hutt Valley overnight.

The Wellington Police Maritime Unit sergeant Craig Pickering and Regional council harbour ranger James Allen were called out to the yacht at 7:45am.

A substantial hole was in the bottom of the boat causing a pool of water which Allen and Pickering had to pump out.

Allen told Stuff they were still trying to get in contact with the owner of the boat, named Jo Bear, to see if he would pay for the cost of craning it out of the water.

He said it was not necessarily the owner's fault.

"It can happen anytime of year, even in calm conditions."

"The boats get regularly get inspected but adverse weather conditions hit them all the time and their chains can wear out and snap."
Allen said the boat would be "substantially expensive" to repair.

According to MetService, Wellington was expected to have strong southerlies, getting to 100kmh in exposed places during the morning.

The Bluebridge Cook Strait ferry which operates between Wellington and Picton cancelled its 8am departure this morning due to severe weather warnings.

According to their website wild weather is predicted for the next two days, so passengers sailing later today and tomorrow may also be affected.

East by West Ferries advised commuters that it had cancelled all Wellington ferry services due to the weather.

MetService say a heavy rain warning is in place for Wairarapa and the eastern hills of Wellington, also for Hawkes Bay excluding the Wairoa District.

All of the North Island is expected to have rain or showers today.

In the South Island, Central Otago, Nelson and Buller are expected to stay mainly dry and showers should clear south of Christchurch during the afternoon.
