Wild Auckland weather shows no sign of abating with more strong winds on their way tomorrow

The wild weather hitting Auckland shows no sign of ending anytime soon.

MetService says westerly winds that could turn into severe gales are expected for Northland, Auckland, Coromandel and the Waikato from 9pm Thursday and into the early hours of Friday morning.

Powerful gale-force winds caused extensive damage across Auckland last night with power lines and trees downed.

Thousands of homes are still without power and roads have been closed in parts of the city.

Flights at Auckland Airport have been disrupted and some schools have been closed.

Further south, the MetService is warning of heavy rain for parts of Taranaki, Whanganui and Hawke's Bay.

The heavy rain comes a day after tornadoes touched down in Taranaki causing damage to property in the area.
