What is Five Eyes?

So what is this 'Five Eyes' group Whistle-blower Edward Snowden is referring to in relation to global spying?

Five Eyes is an intelligence-gathering alliance between five countries which include the US, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

It collects and monitors information from various sources such as phone calls, emails and social media which it shares among its members.

New Zealand uses the Waihopai and Tangimoana spy stations for surveillance and to intercept some of this information.

The agreement of the alliance is that they are not allowed to spy on each other.

However, documents released by Edward Snowden last year show member countries were snooping on each others citizens and sharing the details.

Despite some concerns, Five Eyes has been credited with preventing terror attacks and the conviction of a potential bomber.
