Whangarei's beloved lion Zion euthanised after age-related conditions caused excessive pain

Zion the famous lion from Zion Wildlife Gardens in Whangarei died on the weekend aged 17.

The park says Zion's age-related conditions had advanced rapidly, culminating in difficulty walking and excessive pain.

The vet and keeper teams made the incredibly sad decision to euthanise him on Saturday.

The park is under new ownership and has been renamed the Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary.

The park is currently closed because the enclosures did not meet minimum regulatory standards. It's expected to reopen next year.

It was previously owned by TV's Lion Man, Craig Busch
