A 16-year-old boy has been transferred to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition tonight after the car he was driving hit a power pole in Whanganui this morning.

The crash happened on the corner of Anzac Parade and Rangitikei St at around 8am.

The boy was taken to Whanganui Hospital in critical condition and was this evening transferred to Wellington Hospital.

He was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was not wearing a seatbelt, said Inspector Brett Calkin, Central District Police Road Policing Manager.

"It's a sobering reminder of the consequences of not buckling up," Mr Calkin said.

"It takes just a couple of seconds, yet it drastically reduces your chances of serious injury in a crash," he said.

The Serious Crash Unit continues to investigate the crash, Mr Calkin said.
