'We're doing the best we can' - Coalition talks to go on, but little hope of a decision today

October 11, 2017

The NZ First leader says the talks will continue until tomorrow evening, then he will take both options to his board.

With Winston Peters' self-imposed deadline for a coalition deal ending today, it's anyones guess as to whether that will be realised.

After his second meeting with National yesterday the NZ First leader said talks would be finished by this evening, after which he would meet with his board to get a consensus on which of the two options they wanted to go with.

Upon leaving a meeting with Labour later that evening Mr Peters told reporters waiting outside the negotiation room in Wellington that "Not tomorrow night, we can't possibly get to the board tomorrow night".

Mr Peters was also less than positive about even being in a position to make a decision tonight.

"What we'll be able to do is now as a caucus sit down and say this is what we can present to the party, this is what it looks like, this is how quickly we can assemble information," he said.

The new timeline means the Kiwi public may be waiting for Winston a bit longer than expected.

"The election was only decided 2pm last Saturday, it's Wednesday, we're doing the best we can and we'll try do it in the time frame we have," Mr Peters said last night.
