The large Reading Cinemas complex on Wellington's Courtenay Place has closed until further notice following an independent engineers' report.
The report found a potential risk in parts of the building should an earthquake hit, it said, and the building would remain closed until a final assessment had been completed.
The building houses a movie complex, food court and retail stores.
The building's car park was demolished after it was damaged by the 7.8 magnitude Kaikōura earthquake in 2016.
A statement was released on the cinema's Facebook page early this morning.
The company said tickets could be redeemed at Reading Cinemas in Porirua or by emailing for a full refund.
