Wellington's first KiwiBuild homes to be constructed next year near city's heart

1 NEWS has revealed another planned KiwiBuild development has hit an embarrassing snag.

Wellington's first central KiwiBuild homes are set to be ready by 2020 with another build on the cards for Lower Hutt, the Housing Minister announced today.

However, KiwiBuild has hit a snag in another part of the country.

More than 40 KiwiBuild apartments are on their way for first home buyers in the Wellington suburb of Mount Cook, with the six-storey apartment block to be built on King St.

The 44 two-bedroom apartments are expected to be completed by 2020.

The cost would range between $450,000 to $500,000.

The High St, Lower Hutt apartment would be built in the next year, consisting of a one-bedroom, 15 two bedrooms and four three-bedroom apartments.

Housing Minister Phil Twyford said there was a need for affordable housing in Wellington, as home prices and rent costs rose.

He said developers were in the process of making deals for KiwiBuild around New Zealand.

However, in the Waikato Te Kauwhata build, there was not a single entry to buy the 10 KiwiBuild homes.

Officials are calling it an administrative error.

National's Judith Collins said the problem was Mr Twyford was not "on top of detail".

The Housing Minister said first home buyers did not always want to buy a home off the plans that was scheduled to be built a year and a half later.

"So we won't be doing much more of that," Mr Twyford said.
