February 9, 2019

Fire and Emergency NZ turned out to the fire in the hills late Saturday afternoon.

Fire crews have managed to get a scrub fire in the Wellington suburb of Wadestown under control.

Firefighters had difficulty accessing the blaze due to its location with the fire about 30 metres by 35 metres on steep terrain above houses.

There have been no reports of injuries.

Crews are expected to remain at the scene for some time.

There was no risk at this stage to surrounding properties despite the fire being close to homes, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson told 1 NEWS earlier.

A spokesperson told 1 NEWS police were notified of the fire at 3.50pm.

Firefighters are tackling the fire in Wadestown and concerned residents are watching on.

"People can see what looks to be flames licking at the ridges of the mountain as the smoke billows down into Wellington and sirens can be heard all over Wellington’s busy CBD, the eyewitness said.
