Wellington property management office at centre of controversial adverts taken over by franchisor

The ad pitted tenants against landlords.

A series of high profile problems at a property management office in Wellington has seen the branch taken over by its franchisor.

Property owners and tenants of the Quinovic office in Te Aro have been emailed with the news.

"Taking over the operations of the Te Aro franchise is not a decision that the franchisor has taken lightly and it follows two very public incidents involving the franchise," said Quinovic’s chief operating officer Paul Chapman.

That was "unauthorised" advertising in August 2018 and more recently fake Facebook and Google reviews," Mr Chapman said.

The advertisements last year were criticised for being degrading to tenants and went on to spark protests.

One ad announced: "Cheers to you! Are you financing your tenant's social life? Afraid to man up? We aren't." Another said, "Your tenants may hate us. You will love us!".

Quinovic's head office distanced itself from the ads, saying it didn't endorse them and the ads didn't conform to its brand.

"We have censured the franchisee in the strongest possible way," Mr Chapman told TVNZ at the time.

The company's now appointed a staff member from their head office as the Te Aro branch's interim manager.

"We are currently in discussions with the existing property management staff," said Mr Chapman.

"We are hoping that the transition to Group Office management will be smooth and seamless but ask for your patience in advance with any transitional issues."
