Wellington Central Library to close tonight 'until further notice' for earthquake repairs

March 19, 2019

The Wellington Central Library building is to close from tonight for earthquake strengthening.

Wellington City Council has announced the library will be closed "until further notice".

"We’ve made the decision to close Central Library after receiving advice from engineers that the building has structural vulnerabilities which mean it may not perform well in the event of a significant earthquake," the council tweeted this afternoon.

"We are working on ways we can make our collection available while the Central Library is closed, but it will take us some time to plan this and get it up and running," the council said.

It would advise on its website when alternative services have been set up.

"We understand that this may cause some disruption, however public safety must be our number one priority," the council said.

The library will be closed from 8.30pm.

Items already out on loan from the Central Library will be automatically renewed.

People can either hold on to the item for now or return it to another branch, and there will be no overdue fees until a new location is set up to collect returned books.
