Wellington artists turn capital into canvas with series of murals

A group of recognised artists are painting murals around the city.

Three Wellington artists are turning the capital into their canvas, painting murals around the region to brighten up bland and empty spaces.

The Dream Girls Art Collective has been commissioned to turn areas undergoing change into works of art.

Miriama Grace-Smith, Gina Kiel and Xoë Hall are all artists in their own right, joining forces in September last year.

“The three of us got asked to do a collaboration mural at a new space they opened in Wellington,” Miriama told 1 NEWS.

“We just really vibed really well.”

Since then they’ve done around 10 projects.

“At the moment you’ll notice around the CBD there’s lots of construction happening … which means there’s been a lot of empty hoardings put up, so just blank walls that are only going to be there for a short period of time.”

And they’ve got a lot more art on the way.

“We’ve got so much in the works,” Xoë said, “murals, illustration projects, other kinds of mediums and surfaces”.
