Weather Outlook: Day at beach for North Island while it's a day indoors for the South

January 19, 2019

It's a wet weekend in store for the South Island while the North Island will bask in sun.

The North Island is expected to be rather gusty but warm weather will be of comfort with temperatures ranging from mid-20s to low-30s. Gisborne takes the cup in the North Island with a high of 31 degrees today.

The Upper North Island will start off a little cloudy and foggy for some parts but it's the place to be with the sun out for the bulk of the day, southwest breezes becoming stronger northwest breezes as the day goes on.

These hot temperatures were forecast as a result of the record-breaking heatwave across the ditch. Queensland has racked up 33 consecutive days with temperatures above 40C in the state's northwest.

Lower west parts of the North Island, New Plymouth to Wellington, can expect a cloudy day while the eastern regions from Napier to Wairarapa have a sunny day in store. The whole lower part of the North Island will feel the strong north-westerlies, which are expected to strengthen into the evening. Strong wind warnings are in place for Wellington and Wairarapa.

The north-eastern ranges of the South Island will also be feeling the strong north-westerly winds and enjoying a sunny day with high temperatures of 31 degrees in Blenheim and Kaikoura. The last few hours of the day will be wet though with showers creeping in from the west.

Greymouth and Hokitika looking a little grim, with heavy falls starting from the afternoon and getting heavier through tonight and tomorrow morning.

The lower part of the South Island looking very wet with Milford Sound expecting thunderstorms throughout the day. Timaru and Oamaru just cloudy with scattered showers. A number of strong wind warnings are in force for the lower eastern parts of the country.

On Sunday, the whole western coast will experience some showers or a cloudy start with it clearing into what should be a finer day with temperatures for most of the country sitting in between 20 to 30C.
