Weather forecast: 'Grunty showers' set to hit Auckland today and over weekend and the NZ v England pink ball Test could be affected

Heavy showers passing over Auckland this weekend are likely to disrupt, but not call off, the Black Caps domineering start over England in the pink ball Test at Eden Park.

While there were patchy showers across Auckland during the first day's play yesterday, none of them actually collided with the ground in Auckland's inner suburbs.

But unfortunately this good luck is definitely not to last, says MetService meteorologist Georgina Griffiths.

"We've had showers in the region for a few days and Eden Park's got lucky," Griffiths says.

"But the showers up there got a lot more grunty, the ones we expect today and tomorrow will be locally heavy.

These fast moving showers forecast for today and Saturday will likely not be hugely disruptive to play, nor will they hang around long enough to soak the outfield.

"I mean Eden Park's a very small part of Auckland," Griffiths says.

"But I do think it will get a couple of decent showers in the next 48 hours. The chances of it (Eden Park) being missed completely are diminishing rapidly.

"So typical Auckland, living up to its reputation, because we're quite good for showers you know. But it's not the end of the world for the cricket.

Where the cricket may run into a bit of trouble is Sunday morning were continued rain is forecast, not just fast moving heavy showers.

However, with the way the Black Caps demolished the England batting line up yesterday, for a miserly 58, a full day on Sunday may not be very necessary for the Kiwis sot notch up the win.

Auckland has a forecast high of 22C, and a forecast low of 16C for both today and tomorrow.

Both Wellington and Christchurch are looking "not particularly plesant" either Griffiths says, with cool southerlys and dull on and off showers forecast.

A high of 17C today and a low of 14C is forecast for today.

And Christchurch is even bleaker, with a chilly high of 13C today and a low of 10C forecast for today.

"I suspect the further north you go this weekend, the worse the weather," Griffiths said.

"There's a lot of weather features over New Zealand between now and Sunday.

"It's hard to find too many places that don't cook up a shower this weekend."
