'We grieve together' - Jacinda Ardern, Governor General sign book of condolences for Christchurch terror attack victims

Jacinda Ardern and Patsy Reddy paid their respects in Wellington after the attacks in which 50 people lost their lives.

The Prime Minister and the Governor-General sat side by side this morning signing a book of condolences in Wellington, paying their respects to those who lost their lives in the Christchurch terrorist attacks on Friday.

"On behalf of all New Zealanders, we grieve together. We are one. They are us," Jacinda Ardern wrote, a statement that the has resonated with the country since the attacks took place.

Governor-General, Dame Patsy Reddy wrote: "For all the communities in Christchurch and around New Zealand who are suffering, our thoughts and hearts are with you."

Shortly after, Speaker of House of Representatives Trevor Mallard, and Minister of Education Chris Hipkins also signed the book.

"New Zealanders have been shocked and deeply saddened by Friday's terrorist attack in Christchurch and the terrible toll it has taken on the lives of so many." Jacinda Ardern said this morning in a statement.

New Zealand has seen an abundance of love over the past few days, actions that showcase "the true values of New Zealanders," Ms Ardern says.

"The Muslim community in New Zealand have experienced the most horrendous attack on them imagineable."

"While it is a small action, the condolence book offers an opportunity for New Zealanders to unite and express our opposition to hate and state our commitment to the values of love and compassion."

The condolence book is open to members of the public to sign, at the National Library on Molesworth Street in Wellington.
