Water supply for Southland town of Winton shut off after critical supply line ruptures

June 29, 2018

The water supply for the Southland town of Winton has been shut off after a critical water supply line ruptured and caused a major leak.

Residents have been asked to conserve water immediately, Southland District Council said on the Facebook.

The council wrote that the co-operation and consideration of residents is greatly appreciated as the town's reserves could potentially be depleted within an hour.

The situation is "critical" and water may be shut off for up to five hours while repairs are being carried out, the Southland District Council wrote on Facebook.

"We are asking Winton people to conserve water as long as they can, and all discretionary use of water should be avoided wherever possible.

"Where health and hygiene is concerned, people should still wash their hands if they need to."

Current water reserves are not expected to last one hour under normal usage levels.

The repair job is expected to take 50 minutes, but when the repair may take place is unknown at this stage.

Local high school Central Southland College requested parents to pick up their children in the early afternoon in a bid to assist with water conservation efforts.
