Watch: Woman arrested after being filmed attacking 'dangerous and unsafe' Auckland traffic island with large implement

March 15, 2018

Members of Occupy Garnet Rd took direct action to disassemble the island.

A woman who was allegedly destroying a traffic island in Auckland's Grey Lynn over safety concerns was arrested this afternoon.

Lisa Prager, the sole person allegedly attacking the piece of roading infrastructure with a sledgehammer-like implement on the Richmond Road and Surrey Cresent intersection was arrested this afternoon.

Police told 1 NEWS she will be summonsed to appear in court on a charge of wilful damage.

Ms Prager is the spokesperson for the Occupy Garnet Rd group who say the traffic island, intended by the Auckland Council to be "traffic calming", is dangerous.

"We want this road returned to how it was," Ms Prager told 1 NEWS earlier today.

"All of the locals agree, as it narrows the traffic turning into Richmond Rd and continuing on down Surrey Cres, is an extremely dangerous obstacle for buses, cars.

"I've seen at least three accidents while I've been working here."

She said the group complained to Auckland Transport, and then went to the reference group, where "the mediator agreed it should be removed", but she says that never happened.

"We've said to them, 'either you remove it, or we will', so this is the first act to remove a dangerous and unsafe obstacle in our neighbourhood."
