Watch: Winston Peters tells Australian journalist he won't be 'inveigled' into Aussie political commentary

August 22, 2018

Australian journalists were asking New Zealand’s Foreign Minister on his views on the tumultuous political situation across the ditch.

New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters stayed tight-lipped on his views of the tumultuous political situation in Australia, as he met with his Australian counterpart Julie Bishop in Canberra today.

When asked if he could work with former-Home Affairs minister Peter Dutton, Mr Peters told the reporter, "The first thing you don't do when you're a visiting politician is poke your nose into another country's business".

"I am far too experienced to be inveigled into that sort of discussion by you."

It comes as Australian Prime Minister defeated Mr Dutton in a snap leadership challenge yesterday, with another ballot possible.

Journalists pressed Mr Peters on Mr Dutton's attitude towards immigration and the Australian-New Zealand relationship.

"I think you're at the wrong press conference, this is about the great future that Julie Bishop and I... intend to presage for the Pacific and the wider area of our influence."

Mr Peters gave the journalists one final piece of advice on the political situation: "As a politician, when you go into a spill, you've got to take your abacus."
