Watch: Vintage steam train rolls into Wellington to mark the centenary of Passchendaele

A vintage steam train has rolled into Wellington station as part of commemorations marking the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele.

The train was built in Christchurch in 1915, and was later named Passchendaele in memory of the 447 members of the New Zealand Railways who died in the first world war.

The battle saw New Zealand suffer its greatest loss of life in a single day.

A number of excursions will take place this weekend from Wellington to Trentham, with passengers dressing in costumes of the era, taking a 40 minute journey to reflect on what it would have been like to go to war in 1917.

The pair spoke briefly at the resting place of 512 Kiwis who lost their lives in the battle.

On a separate trip, a specially commissioned play, Passchendaele Journey, will be performed on board, including music, letters and diary excerpts from the time.
