Watch: Truck & trailer jack-knifes on southern Auckland motorway, leaving thousands grid-locked

December 11, 2017

The dramatic moment a massive truck and trailer jack-knifed on Auckland's Southern Motorway blocking all northbound traffic has been caught on camera by a commuter travelling in the other direction.

Dashcam footage of the incident which happened around 2:30pm this afternoon, was posted to YouTube by Peter Smith.

The footage shows the truck sliding down the roadside barrier in a cloud of burnt rubber before it jack-knifes sideways leaving all the northbound lanes of Auckland's Southern Motorway blocked just after Papakura.

Luckily the traffic behind the truck saw the incident in time, narrowly managing to avoid disaster.

Jealous motorists were forced to watch as a young skater glided through the massive line of vehicles who were going nowhere while emergency services tried to clear the scene in the blazing sun.

Video sent to 1 NEWS by Kurt Schultz, who was stuck in traffic near the incident, shows a long line of cars waiting for the truck to be cleared, with people getting out of their vehicles while they wait.

The New Zealand Transport Authority have recently tweeted that the crash is now cleared but motorists are expected to have delays in the area.
