Watch: Truck towing burning trailer speeds down State Highway 1 near Timaru

Incredible footage has emerged of a truck towing a burning trailer behind it down State Highway 1 in South Canterbury this morning.

Hayden Anderson told 1 NEWS he was travelling to work in Oamaru with a group of colleagues at 8am when the truck whizzed by with a large fire burning on a trailer behind it.

"There was a bit of confusion and swearing wondering what was going on and why he was still moving.

"My father's been a truckie for years so I gathered he was trying to find a safe place to pull over where he wouldn't set the dry paddocks a light or close the road to everyone.

"What a way to start the morning off!" Mr Anderson said.

Mr Anderson says himself and his workmates were about 10 minutes out of Mikikahi, 30 kilometres south of Timaru, when they filmed the incident.

"We could feel the heat of it through the windows as it passed," he told 1 NEWS.

Fire and Emergency NZ said the truck driver was unaware of the fire at first and continued driving north down SH1, before pulling over in a safe area to wait for fire crews.

The fire took a while to put out as water around the area was scarce.

Five fire engines and 16 firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze at 10:20am.

No one was injured in the incident.
