Jools and Lynda Topp were honoured with medals before thanking everyone attending in truly Kiwi fashion.

The Topp Twins have capped off a special day at their investiture ceremony for those attending at Government House in Auckland this afternoon with a special performance.

Dame Jools and Dame Lynda Topp were honoured for their services to entertainment and lived up to the reputation with a harmonised waiata.

The sisters were part of a special investiture ceremony this afternoon with other honoured women, in recognition of the 125th anniversary of women gaining the vote in New Zealand.

Dame Jools told 1 NEWS earlier this year when she was honoured in the Queen's Birthday Honours list it "was more political to accept it than not to accept it".

Jools Topp said 30 years ago, the twins would never have received medals due to their political radicalism.

"We were the rebels, we were the underground performers [a] long time ago, and 30 years ago, they would never have thought about giving us this - we were just way too radical," she said.

"We had an interview yesterday and basically, I said, you know, 'The rebels finally got their medals'.

"In some ways, we're acknowledging all the people that were not afraid to stand up and that, for us, is a really important part and really just shown how much New Zealand's changed."

The twins have been entertaining New Zealanders for more than three decades, and were inducted into the Music Hall of Fame in 2008.

As well as touring the country, the duo have released audio books, television shows and a documentary.
