In a world-first, LED lights have been fitted at the Bay Oval cricket ground in Tauranga.

The new lighting towers have turned night into day at the grounds, following a trial run this week.

At 51 metres high, the six light towers are of average height for international standards, SunLive reported.

The lights, which will be run by diesel generators, were installed as part of a million dollar upgrade to the grounds.

The final cost for renovations is expected to reach $3 million by the time they're completed.

The first match on the revamped grounds will be the McDonald's Super Smash when Northern Districts play Auckland on December 16.
