'Watch this space' - Government to announce package to tackle chronic teacher shortage

Labour MP Chris Hipkins says he'll be revealing new measures to improve teacher supply before the new school term begins.

Relief is on the way for stressed teachers, with the Government set to announce a package to tackle a chronic shortage.

Education Minister Chris Hipkins says he'll be revealing new measures "in short order" and before the new term begins.

"Watch this space, yes, there will be announcements on teacher supply in very short order," Mr Hipkins said today at Parliament.

"We know how much financial pressure schools are under, and particularly when it comes to teacher aid salaries, we know that's one of the biggest cost pressures that schools face, and government funding hasn't really kept up with that."

An NZEI survey today revealed one in five Auckland primary schools will start the new year without enough teachers.

Before the election, the previous Government promised to extend a voluntary bonding scheme, which pays $17,500 of student loans of new teachers who work for three years in decile one schools.

But the incoming Labour government says it wasn't budgeted for – creating a $37.5 million black hole.
