Watch: Southern stargazers capture incredible Aurora Australis on camera

August 28, 2018

Keen astrophotographers braved cold temperatures on Sunday night to catch photos and videos of the strong Aurora Australis visible in the south.

Sunday night's show was due to a strong category G3 electromagnetic storm ejecting particles from the sun, which then travelled through space and eventually burned up in Earth's atmosphere.

The phenomena is the same thing as the northern variant - Aurora Borealis - and is often seen in the south during clear skies.

It is sometimes not visible to the eye, but photographers using long exposures can capture the beautiful colours.

Camille Alison Cudal was among those who headed out with a camera and tripod, capturing images which she used to create a timelapse video of the phenomena.
