Watch: 'Repulsive, awful' - Winston rips into journo during tirade, keeps tight-lipped on negotiations ahead of National meeting

October 9, 2017

Day two of formal negotiations started with Mr Peters having fun with the media.

As the second day of formal coalition negotiations begin, Winston Peters is keeping his cards close to his chest, refusing to give away any details on policy talks with National and Labour.

NZ First started today's coalition talks with National at 9.30am, and will speak to Labour at midday.

Could any announcement next week look like this? Here's how Winston Peters revealed the news 20 years ago.

When he arrived at parliament this morning, 1 NEWS political reporter Katie Bradford asked how he was feeling, to which he replied, "just like yesterday", and cracked a smile.

The NZ First leader said he couldn't talk about any policy areas under discussion.

When he was asked by a journalist if he was focusing on the same policy areas for both parties, Mr Peters launched into a verbal attack on a past article they had written.

He described it as a "repulsive, awful, piece of lazy journalism".

"Please don't write stuff like that again, please."

Although Mr Peters remained in high spirits, he continued the tirade, saying it was "littered with rubbish and nonsence".

However he did refer to the journalist as a "smart guy".

Bill English explains the negotiating team on TVNZ1’s Breakfast this morning.
