The PM says there was a record number of food parcels handed out to struggling families today.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has visited the Auckland City Mission today, where she got stuck in making food parcels to be delivered to Kiwi families struggling to make ends meet this Christmas.

Ms Ardern was joined by some of her fellow Labour MPs, including Jenny Salsea and Phil Twyford, as she grafted in the back room of the Auckland City Mission.

"We're here today at the city mission because for weeks now all of us have been aware of the huge demand at places and services across the country like Auckland City Mission.

"I myself have passed through the city and seen queues outside the door, today they’ve hit record numbers 400 food parcels, that just goes to prove the real squeeze on families particularly around this time of year," she said.

Ms Ardern got a loud cheer from those gathered to receive food from the Auckland City Mission and was more than happy to stop and pose for selfies with them.

The Prime Minister also urged others to donate non-perishable foods to their local missions in order to help less fortunate Kiwis.
