Watch: PM widens inquiry into abuse of children in state care to include faith-based institutions

November 12, 2018

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the extension today.

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into historical abuse of children in state care is being expanded to include children abused in faith-based institutions.

The inquiry was announced in February by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who said at the time it was a "chance to confront our history and make sure we don’t make the same mistakes again".

However, it had been criticised as it initially excluded abuse of children in religious institutions unless the children were sent by the state.

Jacinda Ardern talks turning the 100 day plan into a 300 day plan.

Today, Ms Ardern said extending the scope of the inquiry "was one of the most strongly argued issues in the consultation process".

"We recognise the seriousness of abuse and confirm our commitment to considering future measures to help protect all children, young people and vulnerable adults," she said.

"In broadening the scope, we nevertheless remain committed to fulfilling the expectations of those who sought an inquiry into state care."

The first interim report would still focus on state care, reporting back at the end of 2020, with a separate report focusing on the faith-based institutions.

A Royal Commission is reserved for the most serious issues of public importance.

The report looks at physical, sexual, emotional and psychological abuse, and neglect. Following consultation, it will look into inadequate care or improper treatment resulting in serious physical or mental harm.
