Watch: 'My whole life slipped away' – James Rolleston opens up about 'hitting rock bottom' after car crash

October 18, 2017

The Boy star told TVNZ1's Sunday show he was helped through the ordeal by his good friend and fellow actor Cliff Curtis.

James Rolleston, the star of the Kiwi classic film Boy, has opened up to TVNZ1's Sunday show about his road to recovery from a near-fatal car crash last year in a frank and emotional interview.

Rolleston nearly lost it all after the car he was driving hit a bridge near Opotoki in July 2016.

"I couldn't understand why my body just wouldn't work, my whole life slipped away like I was at rock bottom," he said of the aftermath of the crash which had left him in a coma.

TVNZ1's Sunday show is featuring the emotional journey of the Boy star, since shooting to fame as a youngster.

After undergoing intensive physical and speech therapy, Rolleston made his movie comeback in the re-make of the Kiwi classic movie Goodbye Pork Pie, which was released earlier this year.

Throughout his dramatic recovery his close friend and fellow Kiwi actor Cliff Curtis was there by his side.

"I just love seeing him, I'm so happy everytime I see him, that journey we went on since I first met him through all of them movies then we took him to Hollywood and introduced him to that world," Curtis told TVNZ 1's Sunday as he hugged his good friend.

"Then coming back here the accident, the near-death experience, the recovery, the coma, all of that, and then to come back out the other side of it and to see this beautiful young man, I'm just happy he’s alive really."

You can watch the full feature on James Rolleston's incredible tale this weekend on TVNZ 1's Sunday show at 7:30pm.
