Watch: 'For me it's a slight' – Jacinda Ardern rejects comparisons between herself and Donald Trump over immigration

November 7, 2017

PM Jacinda Ardern says international comparisons with her and US President Donald Trump's stance on immigration are a "slight on New Zealand's reputation".

Ms Ardern was asked today by Reuters about the Wall Street Journal's article which likened Labour's immigration policy to that of Mr Trump's hard stance on migrants prior to the New Zealand election.

It attributed much of her political success to "tapping into growing unease about affordability, particularly among young voters, and feeding off a global backlash over immigration".

Ms Ardern said this comparison was not accurate.

"I'm absolutely bothered by the misrepresentation around our immigration policy, we are a a party that has advocated and will double the refugee quota in New Zealand."

"For me it's a slight on New Zealand's reputation to suggest we are anything other than humanitarian, outwardly focused and built on the hard graft and work of migrants in New Zealand."
